How to choose the right road base
Road base vs crushed rock
Road base is a blend of crushed rock and fines that locks together when you wet and compact it. Crushed rock classes such as Class 2 and Type 2.1 are road base made to tighter engineering gradings. Use them when an engineer, council or builder specifies them.
Choosing a size
20 mm road base suits most driveways, paths, pavers and shed pads. Choose 40 mm for deeper sub-base layers and heavy traffic. Crusher dust is the fine by-product of crushing rock and is used as a smooth bedding or levelling layer on top.
Compaction matters
Lay road base in layers of about 75 to 100 mm, dampen each layer and compact it with a plate compactor. Allow roughly 20 to 30% extra because road base settles as it compacts.

How deep should road base be for a driveway?
Around 100 to 150 mm of compacted road base suits a typical car driveway. Heavier vehicles or soft ground may need 200 mm or more, so follow your engineer's or builder's specification where there is one.
How many tonnes of road base are in a cubic metre?
Road base typically weighs about 1.5 to 1.8 tonnes per cubic metre loose. The weight of each product is listed on its page, and the booking converts it automatically.
What is the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 crushed rock?
Class 2 has a tighter grading and higher strength and is used as base course. Class 3 is a slightly lower specification that is typically used as sub-base underneath.
Is recycled road base as good as quarry road base?
For most driveways, paths and hardstands, recycled road base compacts and performs similarly at a lower price. For engineered pavements, use the product your specification calls for.
