How to choose the right sand
Which sand do I need?
Mortar and render need fine, well-graded sand: use bricklaying sand for laying bricks and blocks and plastering sand for render. Pavers sit on a compacted bedding sand, and concrete needs a coarse, sharp sand such as coarse river sand. For raising levels or filling trenches, a cheaper fill or packing sand does the job.
Washed or unwashed?
Washed sands have most of the clay and silt removed. They drain better, stain less and give cleaner joints, which is why they suit pavers, pools and play areas. Unwashed sands keep some fines, which helps them bind and compact, so they're preferred for mortar, packing and bulk fill.
How much sand is in a tonne?
Most sands weigh about 1.5 to 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre when loose. One cubic metre is roughly 10 to 12 standard wheelbarrow loads. Our calculator converts your area into cubic metres and tonnes so the right truck is booked.

Sand FAQs
What is the best sand for laying pavers?
Use a washed or screened bedding sand, spread and screeded to about 20 to 30 mm over a compacted road base. Fill the joints afterwards with fine washed sand or a jointing sand.
Can I use bricklaying sand for concrete?
No. Bricklaying sand is too fine and contains clay, which weakens concrete. Use coarse river sand with aggregate, or a pre-mixed concrete blend with cement added on site.
What is the minimum amount of sand I can order?
The minimum order is 1 cubic metre. Enter a larger quantity and the booking recommends the right size tipper truck automatically.
Is play sand safe for children's sandpits?
Washed play sand has been washed to remove most of the clay, silt and dust, which makes it the right choice for sandpits. Cover the sandpit when it's not in use to keep it clean.
How is delivery priced?
