How to choose the right mulch
How deep should mulch be?
Spread mulch 50 to 100 mm deep. 75 mm is a good all-round depth. Keep it a hand-width away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent collar rot.
Choosing a mulch
Forest mulch gives a natural bushland look and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Pine bark and cypress last longer. Hardwood chip is a neat, durable all-rounder, black mulch gives a strong contrast, and general woodchip covers big areas cheaply.
Compost vs soil conditioner
Compost and soil conditioners are dug into the soil to add organic matter, not laid on top like mulch. Work 30 to 50 mm into the top 150 mm of soil before planting, then mulch over the top.

How much area does a cubic metre of mulch cover?
At 75 mm deep, one cubic metre of mulch covers about 13 m². At 100 mm deep it covers about 10 m².
Why does mulch cost more per tonne than sand or soil?
Mulch is very light, around 0.3 to 0.4 tonnes per cubic metre, so one tonne is roughly 2.5 to 3 m³ and covers far more ground than a tonne of sand or soil. Use the calculator to work out the volume your beds need.
Which mulch lasts the longest?
Chunky pine bark and cypress chip break down more slowly than fine forest mulch or general woodchip, so you top them up less often.
Does mulch attract termites?
Keep any timber mulch away from house foundations and weep holes, and leave a clear gap around your building. This is especially important in termite-prone areas.
How is delivery priced?
