How to choose the right gravel
Picking the right size
7 to 10 mm aggregate suits fine concrete, pipe drainage and paths. 14 to 20 mm is the standard size for structural concrete, retaining wall drainage and gravel driveways. 40 to 50 mm is for rubble drains, soakwells and stabilising soft ground.
Blue metal or scoria for drainage?
Both drain freely. Blue metal is hard and dense, so it won't break down under load. Scoria is a porous volcanic rock that weighs about half as much, which makes it easier to barrow and lighter on roofs and planter boxes.
Making your own concrete
Dry concrete blend is sand and 10 mm aggregate pre-mixed for you. Add cement and water on site at the ratio on the cement bag. It's ideal for footings, post holes, small slabs and paths.

What size gravel is best for drainage?
20 mm blue metal is the most common drainage aggregate for retaining walls and trenches. Use 7 to 10 mm around ag pipes, and 40 to 50 mm for large rubble drains or soakwells.
What is blue metal?
Blue metal is crushed hard rock, usually basalt, with a blue-grey colour. It is angular, strong and doesn't break down, which makes it the standard aggregate for concrete and drainage in Australia.
How much does a cubic metre of gravel weigh?
Blue metal and most gravels weigh about 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre. Scoria is much lighter at roughly 0.8 tonnes per cubic metre.
Can I use gravel for a driveway?
Yes. Lay and compact a road base first, then spread 50 to 75 mm of 14 to 20 mm gravel on top. Angular gravel locks together better than round pebbles and moves less under tyres.
