Where we cover

Across the Hills townships

The Adelaide Hills spread across dozens of townships, and the Mount Barker area sits under its own council. Check your town for the real figure.

Wider region

Woodside, Lobethal, Gumeracha, Birdwood, Balhannah, Oakbank, Mount Torrens

Council & permits

Do you need a permit in the Adelaide Hills?

On your own land, no. On a road, footpath or verge, you'll need approval from the Adelaide Hills Council. Two things worth knowing up here. The Mount Barker townships fall under a separate council with its own rules, and the steep, narrow blocks common across the Hills can limit where a bin sits. Your supplier deals with both every week and can point you the right way.

Where it goes

Where your Hills load ends up

Most of it runs through the region's recovery centre, and the tip fees plus SA's landfill levy are baked into your price.

Heathfield Recovery Centre

The region's tip on Scott Creek Road, run by the Adelaide Hills waste authority.

Green waste to mulch

Prunings are chipped on site, and kerbside organics go to Jeffries for composting.

Free bushfire drop-off days

Before fire season the council opens free green-organics days at Heathfield, Woodside and Gumeracha.

What locals clear out

What the Hills clears out

Bushfire prep, stone properties and big leafy blocks give the Hills their own mix of skip jobs.

Bushfire-season green clean-ups on leafy and acreage blocks
Stone and rubble from Hills-stone property work
Renovations of the old Hills cottages
Large-block and garden overhauls
End-of-lease and rural-property clear-outs
Deceased estates and whole-house declutters
Keep these out

What can't go in the skip

Asbestos. Never in a general skip, and most recovery centres won't take it. Double-wrap it, label it, and take it to a licensed cell. Over 10 square metres needs a Class B licence.
Gas bottles, chemicals and paint. Pressurised or liquid waste goes to a hazardous-waste drop-off, not the bin.
Batteries and e-waste. Electronics and batteries go to e-waste recycling, kept out of landfill.
Tyres and mattresses. Most yards will take them for a small extra charge.
