Council & permits

Do you need a permit in Adelaide?

Greater Adelaide is served by a spread of councils, and by regional waste bodies like NAWMA in the north and East Waste in the east. A skip on your own driveway or block needs no permit; one on the road, footpath or verge needs council approval, and fees differ between councils. In the Hills, an Adelaide Hills Council permit applies for public land.

Where it goes

Where your Adelaide load ends up

Waste is sorted at transfer stations and sent to landfill, and South Australia's state levy on landfilled waste is part of why weight drives the price.

Wingfield

The Integrated Waste Services transfer station, sorting and baling metro waste.

Inkerman & regional landfills

Where residual waste is tipped after the recyclables are pulled out.

Green waste to mulch

Garden organics are composted rather than landfilled, which trims the levy.

What locals clear out

What Adelaide clears out

Character stone homes, the Hills and the growth suburbs give Adelaide its own mix of skip jobs.

Renovations of the character sandstone and bluestone villas and bungalows
Green-waste and fire-preparation clean-ups across the Adelaide Hills
Foundation and excavation spoil off the reactive-clay plains
New-build waste in the northern and southern growth areas
End-of-lease and rental turnovers
Deceased estates and whole-home clear-outs
Keep these out

What can't go in the skip

Asbestos. Never in a general skip, and most recovery centres won't take it. Double-wrap and label it for a licensed cell; over 10 square metres needs a Class B licence.
Gas bottles, chemicals and paint. Pressurised or liquid waste goes to a hazardous-waste point, not the skip.
Batteries and e-waste. Electronics and batteries head to e-waste recycling, off-limits to the bin.
Tyres and mattresses. Accepted by most yards, with a fee added to each.
