Council & permits

Do you need a permit in Geelong?

On your own property, no. On the nature strip, footpath, road or a laneway, yes, under the City of Greater Geelong's local law. In practice the skip company arranges the permit, so it's rarely something you chase yourself. Check with your supplier before the bin turns up.

Where it goes

Where your Geelong load ends up

Geelong runs its own tips, and one detail shapes the price: the city is charged Victoria's higher metropolitan levy, the same as Melbourne.

Drysdale Landfill & Recovery

The main landfill and public recovery centre, on Becks Road, Drysdale.

North Geelong recovery centre

An interim recovery centre serving the northern suburbs.

Metropolitan levy

The state lists Geelong at the higher metro landfill rate, the same as Melbourne, not the country rate.

What locals clear out

What Geelong clears out

Rapid growth, an industrial north and the coast give Geelong its own mix of skip jobs.

New-build waste across the Armstrong Creek growth corridor
Factory and yard clears around the Corio industrial belt
Coastal and holiday-home renovations out on the Bellarine
Renovations of the older weatherboard and period homes in the inner suburbs
End-of-lease and rental turnovers
Deceased estates and whole-house declutters
Keep these out

What can't go in the skip

Asbestos. Never in a general or open skip. In Victoria a householder can move only a small amount, double-wrapped and labelled, to an EPA-authorised landfill, so call ahead.
Gas bottles, chemicals and paint. Pressurised or liquid waste goes to a transfer station or chemical drop-off, not the bin.
E-waste and batteries. E-waste is banned from Victorian landfill, so electronics and batteries go to a drop-off.
Tyres and mattresses. Most suppliers take them, but they carry a separate fee.
